Position Title:  Animal Care and Client & Customer Service


Department: Animal Care


Classification: Animal Care Associate


Date: June 2016


Summary: Responsible for Animal Care, Customer Service, Food Program Management, and Clinic Assistance,


Essential Duties and Functions:



Animal Care:

Provide adequate living environment, maintaining cleanliness of cages, food, water and mental enrichment to shelter animals daily, according to the protocols and practices set forth in The Standards of Care in Animal Shelters.

Monitor animals and immediately report health or behavior abnormalities to supervisor, and shelter veterinarian

Participate in stress and disease reduction efforts through purposeful and compassionate  and placement of animals in the shelter environment

Perform animal bathing and basic grooming

Create and maintain necessary animal records, perform data entry

Understand the care for neo-natal kittens and other special needs animals


Facility Care:

Follow established disease control protocols to daily clean, disinfect, and maintain shelter and Satellite Adoption Room  kennels, cages, and general areas

Operate laundry and dish-washing equipment

Restock cleaning areas with supplies and equipment

Maintain equipment in working condition, report equipment or supply needs to supervisor

Maintain work and general areas in an organized manner


People Care:

Cultivate positive client ,volunteer and coworker relations through professional,

courteous, and educational interactions

Assist clients with animal adoption process; facilitates client/animal interactions to insure

a safe and pleasant experience

Practice and encourage the humane treatment of animals

Provide quality customer service to clients, volunteers, and staff while actively promoting

our mission, services, programs, and events

Promote donation and giving opportunities as appropriate

Work cooperatively with all volunteers, recognizing the talent and commitment they bring

to our organization



Ensure a safe work environment; following all safety guidelines, including PPE, and

modeling safe work practice

Take immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member,

volunteer, client, animal, or the organization at risk


Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

Work is performed in a clinic, kennel/shelter setting and outdoors

·Frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, climbing stairs, walking and, standing on feet 8-10

·hours per day while performing job functions

·Exposure to disinfectant solutions when cleaning

·Exposure to various weather conditions when working outdoors

·Subject to animal bites and scratches while handling animals of questionable


 Lifting of up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodations

·Consistently exposed to animals and animal allergens under conditions with limited

 alterations available

·Tetanus and rabies (pre-exposure) inoculations are required or must be waived


Reporting Relationships and Contacts:

Reports to President of Organization, Shelter Veterinarian

Mentors and monitors volunteers

Qualifications (Required):

Minimum of 2.5 years’ experience in Animal Care and Management.

Customer service experience

Available to work weekends, holiday shifts, and extended hours as needed


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Commitment to the mission, values, goals, and success of Pet Pantry Of Lancaster County, Inc.                      Highly motivated, out-going, polite, and professional manner

Team player, able to multi-task

Compassion for animals, comfortable working in the shelter environment and willing to

accommodate animals in the work place

Knowledge of animal breeds and behavior evaluation training necessary

Computer skills in a Windows environment

Hourly:  Starting Hourly wage is determined by experience.
